What Is Meditation?

Meditation is shifting your awareness from what you are doing each day to simply being with yourself. It is pressing pause on the constant motion and chatter so that you can tap into your personal potential. You see, each of us comes into this life with talents and interests, and meditation can help you discover and enhance your personal gifts, which are your contributions to this time and space on Earth.

There are different forms of meditation practices, with a few described below, but the common theme with meditation is centering your awareness (sometimes using breathwork, music, or mantras) and allowing any thoughts or feelings to simply flow through without judgment or attention. Some practices use consciousness-changing techniques that have been proven to have many benefits on psychological and physical well-being.

7 Types Of Meditation Practices

There is a multitude of meditation practices already popularized, and each goes about obtaining benefits in different ways.  A few are described here:

1. Focused Attention

Focused Attention is a practice whereby you focus your attention on a sensation, sound, or focal point to clear your mind and reduce your current stress level.

2. Body Scan

Body Scan meditation sessions help you release physical tension to ease any discomfort you might be feeling by focusing attention on parts of the body in a sequence from head to toe or vice versa.

3. Visualization

Visualization involves relaxing your body and calming your mind while picturing positive pictures, symbols, or affirmations to shift yourself into a more serene and focused energy.

4. Loving Kindness

Loving Kindness meditation begins with breathing and centering your mind, and then uses words, phrases, or images to enhance feelings of love and kindness toward others as well as oneself.

5. Zen Meditation

Zen Meditation is rooted in Buddhism as the study of the self, and this practice has been handed down for 2,500 years. Zen meditation is a spiritual practice that focuses on awakening you to the nature of the mind and has many other benefits such as reducing depression and anxiety.  

6. Transcendental Meditation

Transcendental Meditation has also been passed down over thousands of years from Hindu teachings encompassing all aspects of life. A TM teacher assigns the student a mantra, which is to be repeated in the mind for 20 minutes twice daily while in a seated position with eyes closed.

7. Chakra Meditation

Chakra Meditation is a collective term for practices that focus on clearing blockages in the 7 major chakras to promote relaxation, healing, and spiritual awakening. Knowledge of the chakras also dates back to ancient Vedic texts. They are a part of the subtle spiritual body and connect it to the physical body.

A majority of people decide to try meditation for the well-known benefits of stress reduction.  Both mental and physical stress cause increased levels of the stress hormone Cortisol.

Cortisol has been proven to produce many of the harmful effects of stress, such as the release of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines. There are many negative effects of stress, such as:

  • Disrupts sleep
  • Increases blood pressure
  • Promotes both depression as well as anxiety
  • Contributes to fatigue, distractibility, and difficulty focusing

 

The Institute of Functional Medicine references several studies in their article “Beneficial Effects of Meditation on Inflammation” that show that meditation impacts inflammation caused by chronic stress.

They also describe the relationship that chronic stress has with neurotransmitters, the gut microbiome, the fight-or-flight response, and the reduction in anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects. 

There has been a wealth of research about meditation, particularly in the last two decades, that has proven that mediation can have both positive physiological as well as psychological effects.
